Our goal is to provide all of our campers with a safe, fun and developmentally appropriate riding experience. To help accomplish this, we try to accurately assess each camper’s ability in advance to assist in creating balanced groups of riders that have similar ability. If you are registering with friends that have different riding abilities but want to ride together, please select the ability of the least experienced rider. Nothing is set in stone and we always get riders to the correct groups.

Below is an outline of how we assess rider ability. If you are unsure of your rider's ability or have any questions or concerns, please contact us.

IMPORTANT: Novice riders do not need prior mountain biking experience but they must already be comfortable riding a bike. Participants must have the ability to start, stop, turn, and ride in a controlled manner for 3-6 miles. If your child has recently learned to ride and/or is struggling with the basics, they are not yet ready for these rides. Please contact us with any questions or concerns before registering, especially if you are unsure of your participants riding ability.

Novice Riders: Novice riders are already comfortable controlling their bikes with the ability to start, stop, turn, and ride in a controlled manner for 3-6 miles, climbing up and down moderate hills without constant breaks. Example of a Novice Ride: Slowly riding the Shoreline Trail at China Camp without constantly stopping for breaks. Riding from Downtown Mill Valley to Sausalito with minimal breaks.

Intermediate Riders: Intermediate riders are already confident in controlling their bikes up and down hills, slowly climbing moderate hills without constant breaks, and can comfortably ride for 6-10 miles on dirt. Example of an Intermediate Ride: Slowly riding up the Old Railroad Grade from its start in Mill Valley to West Point Inn without walking and a few stops for breaks.

Advanced Intermediate: Advanced Intermediate Riders can confidently ride their bikes on moderate technical terrain, steadily climbing bigger hills with a few breaks, and able to comfortably ride for 10-15 miles on dirt. Examples of an Advanced Intermediate Ride: Steadily riding up the Old Railroad Grade from its start in Mill Valley to East Peak. Steadily riding the Bay View China Camp loop or Slowly riding Camp Tamarancho.

Advanced Riders: Advanced Riders are confidently riding their bikes on technical terrain, energetically climbing bigger hills with very few breaks, and able to comfortably ride for 15-20 miles on dirt. Examples of Advanced Rides: Energetically riding up the Old Railroad Grade from its start in Mill Valley to West Point Inn and then onto Coastal View trail to Muir Beach and then up Middle Green Gulch trail or Diaz Ridge. Steadily riding the Camp Tamarancho loop would be an Advanced Ride.

THERE IS NO REPLACEMENT FOR TIME ON THE BIKE. IF YOUR CAMPER IS NERVOUS ABOUT CAMP OR DOES NOT RIDE REGULARLY, PLEASE HELP THEM GET COMFORTABLE ON SOME MELLOW RIDES BEFORE THEIR SESSION STARTS.
